SARIKEI: Sarikei Pineapple and Fruits Festival (Pesta Nanas dan Buah-Buahan Sarikei 2017) will be held from Nov 18 to 26.

It is organised by Sarikei Division Tourism Task Force in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Art, Culture, Youth and Sports.

Top Event Services has been entrusted to run the show.

After chairing the organising committee’s fourth meeting Thursday afternoon,  Sarikei Resident Mohd Junaidi Mohidin said the festival themed ‘Food Basket of Sarawak’ was the division’s signature event after Pakan District had staged Pesta Pakan in Julau (Pesta Lada) and Meradong (Pesta Limau).

He said Pesta Nanas dan Buaha-Buahan Sarikei will be a platform for showcasing the agriculture produce of the division, for which each of the four districts would set up their pavilions to feature their unique stuff and success stories.

As usual the agricultural exhibition and most other activities organised in conjunction with the week-long  festival will be held in and around the civic centre.

He said following the setup of Sarikei Innovation Centre (SIC), the exhibition had been rebranded Sarikei Agriculture Digital Village to link local agricultural activities to SIC.

“Digital Village basically aims to facilitate and encourage farmers to market their products online,” he explained.

The organising committee had drawn up nightly entertainment that feature local talent and recording artistes to pull the crowd.

Ratu Pesta Nanas will be a platform to pick a representative from the division to vie for Miss Grand Sarawak/Malaysia 2018.

Other side activities are sports competition such as futsal and football, photography competition with prizes for the best 50 entries, static foot drill competition-cum-armory exhibition to be organised by the Armed Forces, and landscape competition organised by Sarikei District Council.

On Nov 21 and 22, some 30 departments and agencies will hold a joint Open Day and set up counters at the Civic Centre to provide services to the public.

The festival will be launched by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at 10am on Nov 19 and closed by Assistant Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datu Len Talif Salleh on Nov 25 evening.

Among those present at the meeting were Sarikei Deputy Resident Abang Mohd Porkan Abang Budiman and managing director of Top Event Services, Edward Henry Mut.
